Virginia Criminal Defense Attorneys

Theft and Shoplifting

Aggressive Defense by Local, Experienced Attorneys

If you have been arrested for shoplifting or a misdemeanor theft charge, you should be worried about the effect of a conviction on your record. If you are facing felony theft charges — for example, for grand larceny, auto theft or burglary — then you should know that a conviction will almost certainly result in mandatory jail time.

At the Fairfax, Virginia law firm of Hale Carlson Baumgartner, PLC, we have an active criminal defense practice run by attorneys with extensive experience representing criminal defendants both in plea bargains and in local criminal trials.

Our criminal defense practice takes pride in offering clear explanations, protective representation and confident advice to our criminal defense clients throughout Northern Virginia. We always try to give our clients a clear picture of the most likely outcome of their criminal case.

Is a Jail Sentence Avoidable in Theft Cases?

The best way to avoid a jail sentence is to find a weakness in the prosecution's case against you that will result in a dismissal of the charges or a not-guilty verdict at trial. In other cases where the evidence against you is difficult to disprove, it may still be possible to avoid jail time by agreeing to a term of probation and restitution (paying back the victim for the value of the stolen property).

These and other alternative sentences are more accessible to criminal defendants who have a knowledgeable local lawyer on their side.
